Window film questions, answered

Straight answers on window film: performance, energy savings, installation and care, security, privacy, and cost. Still have a question? We're a call away.

Performance & benefits

All of our films block 99% of the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Depending on the film you choose, they reject up to about 79% of solar heat and up to 83% of glare, so rooms stay cooler and screens stay readable without closing the blinds.

It can. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that heat gained and lost through windows accounts for about 25 to 30% of a home's heating and cooling energy use, and roughly a third of cooling costs come from solar heat gain through glass. By stopping that heat at the window, quality solar film commonly reduces cooling costs by around 10 to 30%, depending on your climate, glass, and how much sun the windows get.

Both. Solar films cut heat and glare in summer, and low-emissivity (low-E) films add insulation that reflects indoor heat back into the room. Studies show they can reduce winter heat loss by roughly 10 to 20%. That makes film a true year-round upgrade, which matters through Northeast Ohio's seasons.

Only if you want it to. Modern films range from nearly clear ceramic and neutral options that keep rooms bright, to darker reflective films for maximum heat rejection and privacy. We'll match the shade to the light level you want. You don't have to trade away your daylight for comfort.

It reduces it dramatically. Fading is driven by three things: UV rays, heat, and visible light. Window film addresses all three, blocking 99% of UV while cutting heat and glare. It won't make furnishings completely fade-proof, but it meaningfully extends the life of floors, furniture, and artwork.

Yes. Reflective and dual-reflective solar films give strong daytime privacy from outside while you keep your view out, and decorative frosted films fully obscure sightlines where you want complete privacy. Note that reflective privacy works during the day; at night, when it's brighter inside than out, the effect reverses.

Installation & care

Most residential films are installed on the interior of the glass, which protects the film and helps it last longer. Exterior films are available for certain situations. During your free consultation we'll confirm the right option for your specific windows.

No. We lay drop cloths to protect your floors, walls, furniture, and artwork from the soap-and-water solution used during installation, and we clean up everything before we leave. Your space is left exactly as we found it.

We clear and protect the area, deep-clean the glass, cut the film to size, spray the window, then apply and align the film before trimming it for a precise fit and squeegeeing out the moisture. A typical window takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and many homes are completed in a single visit.

The film is usable right away, but the moisture used during installation keeps evaporating for a while afterward. Full curing can take up to about 60 days depending on temperature and humidity. It's completely normal to see slight haze or small water pockets during this time; please don't press on them, as they clear on their own as the film dries.

Wait about 30 days before cleaning newly filmed windows so the film can cure. After that, clean them like any other window using a soft microfiber cloth or synthetic sponge and a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads, scrapers, blades, or stiff brushes, which can scratch the film.

Professionally installed quality film shouldn't bubble or peel. The small bubbles you may see right after installation are just curing moisture and disappear on their own. Cheap DIY film is far more prone to failure, which is why professional installation matters. If you ever want it gone, film is removable, and we recommend a professional handle it to avoid damaging the glass.

Security film

No, and any company claiming otherwise isn't being straight with you. Security film isn't bulletproof and isn't a ballistic barrier. What it does is bond your glass together so that when it's struck, the pane holds in place instead of falling out, delaying and deterring break-ins, containing dangerous shards, and buying time. For the strongest hold, we pair it with a silicone anchoring system that ties the film to the frame.

It depends on the film thickness and your goals. We install everything from 3 to 4 mil natural-disaster film up to 13 to 14 mil high-security film, with an optional silicone attachment system for maximum retention. During an assessment we'll match the right thickness to your risk level, glass, and frames.

Yes. Security film can be paired with solar film so you get break-in and shatter protection along with heat, glare, and UV control. One upgrade that protects and cools. We'll put together the right combination for your windows.

Privacy & decorative film

It depends on the type. Frosted and etched decorative films obscure the view day and night, so they're ideal for bathrooms, sidelights, and office partitions. Reflective one-way privacy films only work while it's brighter outside than inside, meaning during the day. That makes them great for daytime privacy, but not after dark.

Frosted, gradient, patterned, and blackout films in a wide range of looks. Decorative film gives you the etched-glass appearance for a fraction of the cost of replacement glass, and unlike permanent glass you can change it whenever your style changes.

Cost & value

It varies with the type of film, the square footage, your glass and window sizes, and access, so the honest answer is that it's best quoted per project. What we can tell you is that filming your existing windows costs a fraction of replacing them, and the Department of Energy considers solar film one of the faster-payback energy upgrades. We provide free, no-pressure estimates.

For most homeowners, yes. Film upgrades the glass you already have, cutting heat, glare, UV, and fading, and adding privacy or security, all at a small fraction of the cost of new windows, with no demolition or disruption. If your windows are structurally sound, film is usually the more cost-effective way to improve comfort and efficiency.

Working with Raydiant

When the right film is matched to your glass, that's rare. Certain glass types, like some double-pane or low-E units, need films chosen to manage solar absorption and avoid thermal stress, which is exactly why a professional assessment matters. Quality films carry manufacturer warranties (many include glass-breakage coverage), and choosing the correct film helps preserve your existing window warranty.

Yes. Alongside homes, we work with offices, retail and storefronts, medical, hospitality, and multi-family properties: solar control, security film, decorative film, and custom window graphics and wraps. Tell us about the building and we'll scope it out.

We serve the greater Cleveland area and Northeast Ohio, including Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, Parma, Westlake, Rocky River, Beachwood, Solon, Strongsville, Mentor, North Royalton, Medina, Hinckley, Richfield, Akron, and nearby communities.
